Phew. What a shack weekend so far. On friday, morale in section A was very high, 'cos we had 4 men and jimmy treated us to dinner at a seafood place in Ang Mo Kio, recommended by Gerald and Jianxiong. The chilli crab was too spicy, my lips went numb after that. But the deep fried baby squid was really shiok! It was also the first time I saw people eating crab noodle, something like fish head noodle (the milky kind) except they substitute the fish head with crab.
On Sat, wen down to Sitex 04 at Expo. Wah, damn far. Next time they should hold it at Suntec or somewhere more central. Walked around for about 2 hours, and finally settled on a Minolta digicam. I think it's really quite worth it, for $399 you get a 3.2MP, 3x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom, unlimited movie recording and a 1 sec shutter speed. Hmm, plus the freebies were attractive: 512MB SD card (worth $128), a tripod, 20 free 4R prints, photo ink jet paper, 2 years warranty and a battery charger with 4 batteries rechargeable for 1000 cycles. Too bad didn't have time to look around for a suitable laptop.. some of the discounts are really quite good.
After that we half-rushed to City Hall for dinner with my relatives. No wonder few people go to Marina Square, so far from the MRT! My new pair of sandals almost gave me blisters again. We ate at Kenny Rogers at Marina Square. Had the set meal: quarter chicken, macaroni with cheese, vege, pot pie and corn muffin. Full full full. After dinner we tested out my new cam, and basically made a fool of ourselves. But it was fun. =)

Was down with cough and flu for most of the week. Finally went to see the medical officer on Tue to get some medicine. Saw Richie and yijiang at the medical center. Having gone to the medical center two days in a row, I think all the medics must recognise me by now.
Was on duty on Sunday. As usual, quite slack, played some carrom, and had a really philosophical discussion with dennis about the history of human civilisation as we know it; did it really begin only 5,000 years ago? I really wish for someone competent in the knowledge of the ancient Indians to enlighten me right now.
Accompanied my father to the National Cancer Center on monday afternoon for his consultation with the cancer experts. Mom and Aunt went too. Apparently, the cancer was only a small part in the depths of the tumor of the right parotid gland that was removed during the operation. Hence, Prof Chris Goh, the head of the EnT department at SGH, said there was minimal risk of it having spread to the adjacent tissues. It was thus very lucky that my father took notice of an unusual lump while checking his teeth for some stuck food. And I think everyone should be wary with regards to such small and seemingly harmless lumps..
Took my aunt to nearby Pearl's Center while my parents were waiting for the consultation. After that we went to People's Park Complex at Chinatown for dinner. Had the claypot chicken rice that I had with yl and alvin last year.
On wed we went food crawling again, this time with my cousin as well. Does Tiong Bahru Yong Tau Foo sound familiar to anybody? Supposedly it's rather famous.. wah the chilli was damn bloody hot! Surprisingly it didn't make my cough worse. All thanks to medicine I think. Actually nearby there are also a couple of other popular stalls: fish porridge, ngor hiang and prawn cake, and briyani. Must go there again sometime. Hehe.
One thing about the old Tiong Bahru area struck me, as my father put it, the 'old-worldly charm' of yesteryear. The blocks are at most 3 storeys high, giving it a feel blended between living in a private terrace house and in a flat. Plus it's so near the city. No wonder many young executives are buying over the units and refurbishing it for a comfy but affordable place to stay.
Today duty off, went to IMM. Wanted to eat the briyani at the 3rd floor food court, which my aunt said is good, but it was SOLD OUT! *Dang* :(
Bought a couple of cheap Chinese instrumental CDs. Then later we sort of rushed to Bukit Panjang Govt High to watch my cousin performing with her school orchestra. Haha, it rained damn heavily and we could not even alight at the school porch 'cos it was flooded feet-deep with water!

My father has cancer. Unfortunate huh? One of those things that hit you when you least expect it. But I'm thankful it's only stage 1, meaning the crucial metastasis process has not begun. Also, the fact that only part of the tumor they removed last week from the wall behind his oral cavity was found to be cancerous means that it probably hasn't spread to the adjacent tissue. But then.. you never know, so tomorrow he's gotta go down to the National Cancer Center for more tests. May need a couple of radiotherapy sessions.
Coincidentally, tomorrow I am also headed to the National Dental Center for my wisdom tooth consultation. Argh, why must they privatise the Center? Makes it so uncertain if the surgery is Really covered by Mindef.

Regulars at the office are not making things any easier. May I quote one of my colleagues, "I've totally lost all respect for the regulars after this incident." All those army regulars out there who happen to read this, MORALE is something you don't trifle with, nor take chances with. My father would have said, "Never insult the chef." In a way, it applies: Never offend the people who do your work for you.
Throwing SAF SOP at us won't change the fact that it is a rash, poorly-considered, and to a certain extent, juvenile decision, which shows how the bosses are more often than not, out of touch with the situation on the ground.
Another friend was relating how his officer was telling him that even if half of all the SAF regulars suddenly disappear, the current efficiency of the SAF would hardly be affected.
AND, ladies who wish to join the army, don't. 'Cos you will end up receiving lots of email from the SDU. And if you dunno what's that, you probably don't need it. *wink* 'Cos it's the Social Development Unit.

A lazy afternoon at home. Keep thinking today's Sunday hah.
Thanks to everyone who has been asking after my dad, he was discharged yesterday afternoon and is now recuperating at home. The surgeons were skilled enough to avoid cutting the jaw bone, but there's still a 15cm stitch along the right side of his neck.
On the brighter side, at least he can eat normally now. And on an even brighter side, I don't have to eat at the SGH food court or Delifrance anymore! Haha, eating at Delifrance thrice in the span of less than a week is no good for my diet. And going to the same food court everyday, I think the hawkers there recognise me somewhat.

It seems that I have an affinity for the President these days. Two Saturdays ago, I was at acs barker for my co practice when he was attending a private function there. Last Saturday, I was at Taka with William when again I saw the President and his family shopping on the ground floor. Ate at Crystal Jade xiao long bao. Don't ever eat the la mian with stewed beef! Saw Kevin with his family at Taka too, slacking during work hours sia hehe. Saw Ningyi at Kino, good luck for ur CA!
William was complaining about his parents asking him to learn Chinese. 'Ke yi gei wo Jiang You ma?' :p His sis, (I realised I didn't get her name), was kind enough to drop me off at acs barker before heading home. First time I've seen someone drive with a doggie on her lap.
___________
It's back to work tomorrow. Can't stand the regulars. Nvm, clearing quite a bit of leave this two months.
Anyone wanna take a train to Peninsular Malaysia for a short trip?

Phew, finally have some time to blog a little.
Spent the whole of yesterday at the hospital. The operation was super long: imagine waiting from 1030H to 2130H, 9 long hours. Well, the op itself took only 5 hours, much time was wasted at the reception ward and the recovery.
Well, meanwhile, my mom and I went to the National Dental Center to fix an appointment for my wisdom teeth. Argh, what a luxurious problem. The dentist said it is advisable to remove my two lower wisdom teeth. That's half my wisdom! Now I have to go see MO to get a referral letter so that the operation will be covered by min def. Since when has the National Dental Center privatised? Then we went to Pearl's Center for a walk. Got Sun Yan Zi's new album from that parallel-import-shop, which will not play on my cd player! Have to go change it tmr. Strangely it plays on the laptop. Also got Qilixiang for my cousin.
Thanks to all those who asked after my father.. thanks it was much appreciated, esp. janan, yl, gomez, watson and kevin, whom i just got to know that day.
Happy Deepavali to all who celebrate it, esp Prem!! Haven't seen him in a long while, getting used to going home alone now.
Exams coming for those in uni.. good luck to you all! It's just another exam... *shrugs..* or not? heh.

Just woke up half an hour ago.. kinda having mixed feelings now, on one hand, the euphoria of yesterday (ok two days ago doh) is still lingering, on the other, my father's operation looms closer and closer. Mother says he has been out of sorts lately, though not very obviously. I think it's only normal to feel that way days before an operation that could leave half your face paralysed..
It's times like this listening to Fish Leung's 'I am Lucky' that I realise how much it rings true for me, in more ways than one.
I am lucky to have two parents, who are normal, functional adults and not a menace to society. They have provided for most aspects of my life thus far, and if I am not grateful, I deserve to die.
I am lucky to have a younger brother, in whom I can see past unfulfilled dreams have a second chance at blossoming, and who, to my gratification, is 'qing chu yu lan, sheng yu lan'
I am lucky to be healthy, thus far.
I am lucky to have people other than my family appreciate me for who I am, and demonstrating this appreciation in many little nice gestures, throughout the times.
For example, getting a playboy tee and a parker pen with my name engraved on it for my bdae recently. I think it's quite a flattering combination - play hard, work hard? Thanks buddies from the course - William, Louis, Raphael, Parry and Aloysius. Somehow the course changed my NS life somewhat significantly, it added a certain element of unpredictability in my otherwise mundane 8-5 life as a clerk. And needless to say, loads of fun too. Of course, the result of that is I emerge as someone's 'no. 1 funny friend'. :p Eh, I know you're laughing at this.
For example, sneaking out of Thai Express to get me a cake while I was busy flipping through Shermin's Europe trip extravaganza photo album. Like Alvin says, already so close already, no need to be so sneaky la. Haha, just joking la.
And for example, 30 people remembering my bdae - it's hard to list them all, but anyway, thanks watson for the hand-made card, yl (early bird 1), sq (early bird 2 lol), aw, st, xiaofang (e pic is cute!), sm, matt, gf, jason, will, louis, parry, raph, aloy, chinkee, ningyi, chek wun, keith, andy, pearlly, shuhui, devin, melon, rd, benji, damien and alwyn.
And of course, my mom dished up the perfect fish curry for dinner, and we had an aunt over too, and she bought my favorite pineapple tarts from Bengawan Solo. Yum yum.

Haha, I could hardly believe myself when yesterday, MAJ Ang gave everyone half day off to go shopping for this Tue's JID Family Nite! Haha, and the worse thing is the theme is 'Rollin' good times..' I find it Damn corny.
Yesterday was on half day for my dental appointment. As usual it was raining when I reached Bukit Panjang Plaza. Man, the weatherman sure is having an easy time these days! :D
After almost an hour of waiting, it was finally my turn. After an initial check, she said something about my wisdom teeth and took a couple of x-rays. Then came the washing refilling and polishing. 110 bucks. Good money leh. Mom bought two shirts for me for my bdae.

What a sleepy day.. going for a dental appointment later so have a pseudo half day off. Peeeve.
The monsoon season is showing its power. It has never failed to rain just at around 3pm since Monday.
Had many relatives over last weekend for dinner, and I put up an erhu show with my bro and cousins for like 2 hours. Haha, seemed like they enjoyed it. Also went shopping with mom, we took advantage of the last day of the sale at John Little and used up the borders gift cards that we have kept for so long. Good thing there's no expiry date.
