30.8.04

It was a really busy weekend. Duty off on Friday, met a fren for dinner. And did a bit of shopping for Alvin's b'dae gift, and I realised Lot One really has no shops. Bought this mini mango strudel from this food fair there.

On sat, met alvin, sq and qiyue at je to celebrate alvin's bdae. jec is such a pathetic drabby looking place. I didn't want to ice-skate 'cos of an upcoming national arts council music competition, and i felt quite spoil-sport because of that. So we ended up at k-box. K-lunch sucks, but it's cheap so *shrugs*. nasi lemak and karaoke - bad combi.. And alvin insisted on treating us. Later lily and weijie joined us for a while until we were unceremoniously chased out of k-box. actually come to think of it, we were realyl quite thick-skinned to stay one hour after our time was up!

Was quite shack after that actually. took a quick bath and then hopped on the bus to bukit timah with my mom. had dinner at adam road food center - one of my favourite haunts, but i don't go there often anymore 'cos we've no more car, but that's alright. my junior was just telling me that day how the indian mutton soup there is a must-try. and of course the all-famous nasi lemak stall, which the son of Brunei's sultan who used to study at rj used to patronise on a regular basis. BUT, i ended up having some pretty average wu xiang, rojak, and cheng teng, didn't feel adventurous enough for more.

Following that was a few more stops down to acs barker, there was this inaugural practice for an ensemble formed by some frens in the co circle to take part in the biennual nac chinese music competition in dec. it's really a no-frills group, no sponsors whatever, so we are essentially penniless. SO, acs barker's music studio had one of the cheapest rental rates at 40 bucks an hour (without air con). 'wow', i thought when i saw there was only a small fan of dimension not more than 20cm in the whole studio. practised a rather avant-garde, yet traditional in some ways, piece titled 'Falling Rain'. It's like a symphonic poem but on a scale five times smaller, as the ensemble only consists of 20 people.

Ended damn late, slept at almost midnight. Next morning, had to wake up at 8:30 to give tuition at nine. SHACK. Then relatives came over to pray. Seventh month..cannot go swimming this month. Due to the scarcity of chickens on the market, my mother settled for a whole roast duck, which set her back 25 bucks! And my aunt cooked stewed pig's leg. Plus deepfried pork belly. Damn solid lunch.

Then i headed to jason's place for a second lunch. Damn full. This gathering was really quite successful. we played a rather dubious game of Mafia, or polar bear. it's really hard to be the policeman. wanyi and i were quite blur as to how to go about doing it..

SCO Concert

It was not bad, they got world-renowned maestro Kuan Nai Zhong as a guest conductor. They played a really avant-garde piece, Ascent, a concerto for the pipa, which I didn't really understand. But the millenium year of the dragon suite was fabulous beyond words.

Singapore Idol

Haha..totally steady pom pi pi! Crap man..olinda. Still rem how they played Tata Young's "Sexy, Notti, Bitchy" song in the background everytime she was on screen.

I think No. 4 sang the best, stage presence, voice, style...all tops. The law student David Yeo was not bad too, kinda act-cute though. And I can't stand that fashion-design-student-sissy no. 2 who said what 'it takes two hands to clap'. David de Cruz can't sing full stop. Imelda and Dwayne are more like choir girls and boys.

Here're my choices for the top 3:
1. Jeassea Thyidor
2. Olinda
3. David Yeo

Haha that day the few of us in OSC were just mad. After having lunch from the uncle outside, we were talking about the lunar 7th month, and how to scare huzz in the bunk, then someone said he had Ju-On, and we all went to watch it.

Duty off today, just came back from the gym. Can't believe how Ronald Susilo lost yesterday evening to Boonsak Ponsana, but there's no doubt that the Thai was damn good. Woah, still can't forget some of his near-impossible saves.

Tmr on half-day. Going to watch an SCO concert in the evening..sigh, i should have gotten one more ticket for my mom, now i feel kind of sian having to watch it alone.

Duty later again. Have been watching quite a bit of the Olympics when I had nothing to do..saw how Li Li bowed out to world no 1 Gong ruina on sat afternoon..actually I thought she put up quite a good fight in the first round, despite the fact that Gong made many mistakes.

Went to huanxi's house for his 21st bdae party. Tried playing mahjong, but not very good la..

13.8.04

Wow it's Friday already. Just had duty yesterday, off today. Went to Westmall to watch 'I, Robot' with my mom. The theatre was almost empty save for the 9 of us. The mall seemed very empty despite it being almost the weekend. Wanted to eat the Swenson's 5 scoops for $1.39 icecream but I was too cold after the movie!! Didn't eat in the end.

Duties duties, I have so many duties this month. Now getting a bit sian of duties, but then, 8-5 is much worse and more tiring. On duty on Sunday again.

My junior asked me to attend this meeting on merging the Hwachong alumni CO together with the COs from HC and TCHS tomorrow afternoon. Apparently they are against it..actuall I don't see what's wrong, so I told them I won't be attending, since I won't be of any use to their cause..

Last night, rasu and fuhao came back to print notes. Had an understudy too. Was quite slack la..

Ghost in the bunk?

Of course, I realised I forgot about this. Talk about trying to be too smart by inserting references in blog entries..and forgetting to follow up on them. :P

Last Tuesday, Ngai Han was sleeping in the bunk during lunch break. When he woke up, and wanted to get up for lunch, he realised he could not move (a.k.a. suffering a bou of sleep paralysis, which I always experience). But..his situation was quite deviant, because he saw a BLACK FIGUREsitting on his knees!! Hmmmm, I hope he was dreaming. He tried to stirke out at it, obviously he couldn't as he was momentarily frozen. Which gives rise to suspicion that there is something more than just sleep paralysis happening in our bunk..

Well, nowadays I drag the mattress into the library and sleep there instead. Don't call me ham-ji; go try if you dare. I give such things the benefit of the doubt.

Happy 39th National Day Singapore!

It's a lazy Monday..and I am on duty for the second consecutive National Day. Actually I don't mind doing national day duty, at least it's not as bad as doing New Year's Day for e.g.. And of course there's the National Day Parade to look forward too in the evening, followed by the inaugural episode of Singapore Idol. (Wow, lunch was spaghetti, damn good. but it means dinner is gonna be sucky..Oh and jimmy pulled a stunt too, came back with his wife with curry puffs for us. Agnes also came back with some stranger aunty..what's with this - OSC Open House? Lol)

Actually I am quite shack now, the week has been a busy one. Recapping from Thursday..:

A*STAR Inaugural Post-doctoral Symposium

Okay, this was pretty boring, 'cos the presenters were mostly post-doctorals who have just gotten their PhDs..many of them had very poor presentation skills that succeeded in putting me to sleep more than once for each presentation, and I didn't even feel embarrassed about it after a while. Lol.

In fact, after the first tea session, I decided to head out into the sun for a wak around Biopolis. Smsed Teck Chuan to see whether I could visit him at his lab and he said okay. So after asking for some directions, I found myself on the 7th floor of Nanos. The laboratories are really state-of-the-art, and it's just lab after lab there. I spent most of my time in the pantry though. Haha, 'cos he had some paper to rush that day.

Friday

Went to visit Xuan Ming in the morning before duty. Andy, rasu, hx and weiyang went too. Xm was complaining about how the steroids he's taking now will cause him to grow fat, but I seriously doubt that. :p Weiyang finished most of xm's butter cookies. And we heard the escapades of Bo Bo. And I related Ngai Han's ghost experience in the unit's bunk (will elaborate on this later)

Had to rush to camp after that, 'cos I was supposed to book in one hour early. It sort of hit me how there were so many students around, because they had just finished their National Day celebrations in school. Missed having half day off on such school days. But I won't have any more of these days.. Anyway, I had to book in early for the stupid National Day commemoration, which comprised only of reciting the pledge. Then the durian party followed. Haha, seriously I doubt there is any other unit where such a 'party' would be possible. Haha, guess why we had such good fortune? *Hint: it has to do with the regulars.* Haha, aiyah, the CO likes durians mah, so do the warrant officers, so this preference WARRANTS a durian party at the expense of the welfare fund. There were even rambutans and watermelons. I told my mom later in the evening it was a monkey's feast, and she replied, "So there're many monkeys in your office now." I replied, "Nah, they all went home already." Lol..sorry in a lame mood.

NAC Chinese Music Competition

Received a call from Enhui. Then Samuel got on the line, persuading me to join the biennual National Arts Council Competition at the end of the year. Of course, I agreed. I think I will be one of the lousier players in the 20-member ensemble though, having not played competitively for almost two years. Many of the members are from the Toa Payoh CO that I was with not so long ago, and they are all accomplished musicians who either have the highest possible grade in the Chinese Instrumental Exam conducted by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, or are regular guest musicians at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. It's going to be quite fun.

Saturday

Was dozing off on 985 at Toh Yi, just after the Bukit Timah Market when I saw a familiar face I had not seen since December last year - Eddy. How do i introduce him? I always say 'he's the senior who was sec. 4 when i was sec. 1' and that usually works. :D Quite funny, because he was smiling at me, then suddenly he smiled at someone behind too, such that I was wondering if he really recognised me or not. Lol. Turned out that he met two people on the same bus whom he had not seen in a very long time, and he ended up sitting in between us. Talk about coincidences. He just graduated from NUS with a chemical engineering degree, reason being he's a PR and does not have to serve NS.

And I committed Bus Stunt No. 1: When the bus stopped at the West Mall stop, I almost got down the bus, standing on the steps, and passed Jiwei two photocopies of my 11B, which were required for the registration for the NAC competition. Haha. I think the bus uncle was quite surprised.

After a 3 hour nap, I decided to go swimming at CDANS, since I was going to meet sq and aw there later anyway. It was damn crowded, but that was to be expected - long weekend. I think more than 70% of the swimmers were children, so it was not too bad either. Practised my front crawl for the second time in two years. Lol. It wasn't that bad, really.

Then, met sq and we went ahead with a game of bowling before alvin came. We took the last lane as it was her first time playing. Much later, aw came and we caught up a bit. A little practice makes significant difference. My first game was a pathetic 50 something. Then in the last bowl of the second game, I got a strike. But we forgot it was my turn again, and alvin went once...and got a strike too! Lol, so it seemed like I had two strikes, and ended up with a 95. 3rd game I was much more consistent and got a 119.

Then we went to Westmall for dinner. Saw one of my recruits there, but he's one of those I haven't broken the ice with, so we bo hue each other. He was with his gf I think. Partly why too.

Sunday

Tutee cancelled tuition on Sunday, so I just slacked at home. Went for a run, then decided to watch the fireworks at Marina Bay. Orchard Road was freaking jammed up, my mom and I spent half an hour in the 190 from Borders all the way to PS. Then we decided to get off in front of Hotel Rendevous 'cos she was so hungry. Ate at the Kopitiam beside the Art Museum. The oyster omelette (oh-lua) was not bad leh. Then took a walk to the Esplanade. Freaking crowded. I think there were like more than 100 thousand people there. The stairs in front of Marina Square were totally full with people sitting patiently. Was supposed to meet alvin there but not surprisingly failed to see him at all. lol. Good thing I went with my mom, else I would have felt quite lost. The fireworks display was reallyquite impressive. I liked the slow comet-like one where it traced a rather low projectile and 'sailed' through the sky. The one which exploded twice was also quite novel. And who can forget the 3 last biggies that caused mini shockwaves throughout the bay?

Needless to say, getting home on a bus was a nightmare. Here I witnessed bus stunt No. 2: The 190 was totally packed, not a single passenger could get on, and when the bus stopped for an alighting passenger, this ingenious aunty climbed onto the bus from the back door, and triumphantly tapped her ex link card on the scanner, which of course could not beep. :'D Great, I thought.

4.8.04

Been having a slight headache since Monday. =( Actually it started on Friday, after that marathon-duty. But it was gone on Sat and Sunday. Came back on Monday, on and off. Today so far I have no headache, but instead I started to feel giddy. When I got off my bed this morning, I could barely balance myself, had to use the wall to support myself to the toilet. But luckily I can still walk quite normally.

Taking one day off tomorrow to attend the A*STAR Inaugural Post-doctoral Symposium at Biopolis.
