Happy 30th B'dae Hwa Chong
Today is climax of the 30th anniversary celebration for Hwa Chong. It signifies the end of a year of celebration and jubilation, but it means the beginning of many more new things to come. In the short term, A levels (and promos) are just round the corner. In the long term, the school has to contend with changes, among others the integrated program, which would see the new combined school's name changed to Hwa Chong Institution. The Chinese name is the same as The Chinese High School's original name. Sounds kinda weird to me. And they're gonna build an extension at where the current CCA block (and basketball courts) is located - that's for the Hwa Chong International School. Hmmm...and the old hostel at the other end of the campus is going to be converted to a CCA Center, of which the name I have forgotten. It's really going to be quite different in the future.
Went for the Homecoming Carnival earlier this morning. The rainy start to the day kinda dampened my mood a little. But then the people I saw changed it. Only aw, sq and weijie were there before I left. Saw 'school belle' Ms. Ooi and Ms. Wong, who remembers my name by my surname. :P To be fair, the students put in a lot of effort to put up the carnival, and I hope they realise, at the end of it all when the fun is over, what it's all about - that the school (the people inside i.e.), despite its shortcomings, has moulded us into who we are today, and we should do and contribute what we can in our little way to repay the school.
Duty sucks, as usual. Received word that xm has been diagnosed with lupus. Seems really quite a serious, though not life-threatening, disease. The fact that it's, up till now, incurable, doesn't make it any easier to bear. Hope his condition stabilises soon. It must feel terrible enough if it is a week in hospital; I can't imagine a life with a condition like this. Will go and visit him at his home next week.
Sq was suggesting going bowling next weekend. I think it's a good idea.

It just doesn't get any better than this, does this? Argh, sc took mc today, and somehow, they arranged for me to do duty by myself, albeit coming in 4 hours later. But it's still like doing 2 whole duties at the same time. Was quite surprised when I received the sms from dim today. Just came back from the gym then. If I knew I had to last the whole night I wouldn't have gymmed already. :( Thoughtful mom gave me a bottle of Essence of Chicken to perk me up a little, but the thing is I wanna sleep!
Funny how they tried to pacify me with food - 5 fishballs and a bar of chocolate. I am not a 5yo kid leh. But anyhow it was refreshing to book in at 8pm. As my mom wasn't going to cook dinner, I followed her out. Took the loong loong 67 from cck all the way to Kallang MRT, where her friend picked us up for dinner. But before dinner, we stopped by Rochor Restaurant for some daohui, beancurd. Wah, call me a country bumpkin, but I have never eaten such smooth daohui before! It was damn nice. Btw, I stay in the west, so not my fault what. Haha.
Then we adjourned to Kallang Leisure Park for dinner. I never really liked the place, so old and usually filled with undesirable characters, like how my mom's friend put it. I am seldom freaked out by public toilets, but this toilet resembled those in the many horror flicks I have seen. A lot of students, probably after their tenni, squash or canoeing training etc.. which means the food is priced on the lower end too, so that's good.
Today was the track and field finals, and the National Stadium was like a gargantuan jukebox of cheers and songs. What we came for was in the Indoor Stadium however. My bro, and the son of my mom's friend, were practising hard for the National Day Chinese Orchestra Concert on Friday, which involves 2400 performers from all over Singapore. Lol..reminds me of the Millennium Concert on 1 Jan 2000 in which I participated in not so long ago. Security was so tight that we were not allowed to enter to view the rehearsal at first as we didn't have a pass, but we sweet-talked them into giving us one anyway. Saw my primary school classmate Sirliang, who's currently attached to MDC. Saw Benedict too, and caught up a little with him. As before, preparing for this concert is a huge logistical headache - just getting the 2400 performers into the stadium took almost 5 minutes, and the coordinator was just bitching everyone to hurry up throughout the 5 minutes. One thing I hate about people who are not my mom - behaving like my mom. I guess many people know that. If I were down there I would be cursing her like mad.
*yawn* aiyah, go and sleep liao. sorry for not responding to you weiyang, I was sleeping just now too. hehe..

Escapism? No, on the other hand, I thought the following was quite educational and inspirational. If I Could Fly Away
by Frank P Whyte
If I could fly away,
I just might go someplace new.
Far from here,
Across the seas,
Amidst the trees,
In the mountains
Where the air is clear.
I might sit in a cafe`
And listen,
To conversations that I can't understand.
It might not be so different,
From lifeIn my own hometown.
I might fly to the Southern Cone,
Where
Chile, Argentina, and Peru,
Gaze toward the bottom of the Earth.
I could fly to Rome,
And stand on Vatican Square.
I could wait for the pope to bless me,
And forgive me for my sins.
If only he could remember...
I could fly to the Siberian Plains,
But I'm not sure why I would.
I could wait in line
For a loaf of bread,
And dream of better days.
I could fly on down
To Viet Nam,
And hike the Ho Chi Minh trail.
I could watch the fireworks
On Tet,
And try to forget
The river of blood.
I could fly right by
The gates of Dachau,
But it's very close to hell.
And I'm afraid I would lose my air,
Or perhaps,
The burden of souls
Would hurl me to the ground,
As New Nazi's
Assemble nearby,
Trying to resurrect the past.
In the Middle East
Lay riches,
Buried beneath the soil.
It is the power
That drives civilization,
But it will bring us to our knees.
And so these destinations bring madness
As I soar ever higher.
Wishing to translate myself
To a metaphysical plain.
The promises are out there...
Eternal salvation,
A life of comfort without end.
But the only plan of flight, That can lead you to Paradise, Is the flight home, And kindness... And love... And forgiveness... And acceptance.

Devin the 2LT
Don't blame me for being xl but really, Devin finally commissioned yesterday. And why is it when someone from Contingent 1 (Infantry) fainted during DPM Tony Tan's speech, Eugene instinctively thought it was Devin falling asleep? Hehe. Like during many a lecture last time in hc. In many times, he's the same: losing his beret after throwing it, dropping his ippt badge, black patches on the no. 1.. Congrats anyhow. AW pang seh us last minute. YL didn't join us too 'cos Eugene was too strict with the dress code. No slippers. Eugene turned up in long sleeves and black pants. Serious sia. Paul was so worried that his sandals will cause him to be turned away, but then when we reached we saw people in berms, and slippers. Saw Heng Fai there, a spec-turned-OCT. Saw Leong WH at the JP bus interchange when I was boarding the bus to SAFTI. Three 79 juniors went too, Mark, Sihui and Daphne. They got to eat. Haha. Damn. Later, Jason drove Eugene and I to Singapore Island Country Club for dinner (after dropping Paul off at JP). His engine is really noisy, like those racing car. My mom said it's illegal to modify your engine. Hope he doesn't get reported by the public. Actually, the way he tail-gates and speeds, it's only a matter of time. Lol. I've never been to SICC before. Quite suaku hor, but it's not like many people I know who have memberships there. Oh ya, why do gays wear silver belts? Jason was commenting on this group of 4 young guys two tables from us, when one of them bent down to pick something up and revealed a thick silver belt, and he said it's obvious they are gays. *Shrugs* You learn something everyday, and I am sure he's much more street-wise than I am. Anyway, they smoke and look like they were going to beat someone up, so didn't dare to look too long. Sian, today is only Monday. Have to wait till Wed for duty. I have 8 duties in August and I quite like that. Only that it means that Lawrence and Jonathan will be leaving soon after the end of August. :( And there's only recruits and privates in office today, xm and lenard went for medical, hf on duty, law on off. Damn damn sian. Oh, and of course confirm I stay for lunch again, 'cos there's no senior left.

I am damn bored.
I don't like being lonely. When I am lonely, I will think. The more I think, the more I worry. The more I worry.. status quo. Doesn't ameliorate the situation. The situation that came about not by choice.

23.7.04
This week passed really fast. Yesterday was on one day off (given cos I was one of the organisers for the unit anniversary) , went to the Cck Clubfitt gym for the first time. At S$2.50 per entry for non-members, I figure it's neither worth it nor not worth it. The facilities are not bad, but it was a bit crowded at ten plus when I went there, despite it being a week day. Quite a significant number of people were housewives and younger people whom I presumed were either students or nsfs like myself.
Then in the afternoon followed my parents to IMM. Bought a top at Bossini. Don't know why the shop is noticeably emptier than the rest of IMM, which was crowded for a Thursday. Was looking at a few other shops, but despite the 'Great Singapore Sale', not much stuff were much cheaper than usual. Of course, Hang Ten is offering a 30% discount on all bottoms.
Was talking about my unit anniversary at CDANS last thursday. We had 2 bowling games, and one at Laser Quest. The latter is really quite fun and quite tiring too. And it was amusing to see how some of the regulars bowl. Janan even made a video of how cartoon some bowlers can look..kicking like donkeys for e.g. Lol.
Sian. Life is getting really monotonous with so many seniors ORDing. I think I will probably stay in for lunch forever from now on..

On duty later. I haven't had time to blog for the past week. Just now I went to CDANS to swim, only realised that I can use the pool for free as long as I change my SAFRA card for an access pass on Thursday, 'cos my unit anniversary was held there. Actually, the pool itself is not bad, although it only has 7 seven lanes, but it's much less crowded there compared to cck pool. But halfway there was this big bunch of civil defence recruits arriving to use the pool, at least they only used half of the pool. Well, still better than public pool when sometimes a few whole classes from the nearby secondary school suddenly chiong in and flood, or rather empty, the pool (of water).
Wah, actually I am still quite shack now, haven't slept properly over the weekend. Yesterday morning, I gave tuition at 9am, one hour earlier than usual 'cos I had to rush down to Victoria Concert Hall by noon for the Hsinghai rehearsal. They catered chicken rice for lunch, and there's this member of the society who does not play any instrument; her sole role seems to be to act as a surrogate mother to all the musicians. Haha, she's in charge of the coats, food, and she even took the trouble to make some side dishes to complement the chicken rice. She's one of the reasons why I like to help Hsinghai, always gives you a very homely feeling there.
The rehearsal was very useful for me, I had attended only one practice with the guest conductor beforehand..lol. This concert was one in which I practised for the least! No choice also, so suay to kena two Sunday duties in a row in the month before the concert, and I couldn't possibly go on Friday evenings 'cos of work. The concert was successful, and I benefitted, no doubt, from it. It's not everyday that you are graced by one of the best conductors in the CO arena..someone told me it's almost a miracle that a professional conductor of such high standing would have agreed to conduct an amateur orchestra, what more we are based in Singapore, so far away from China.
After the concert was a very good dinner at Stamford Arts House, where the CO is based. Spent quite some time talking cock with an old friend pb, and his brother, who is also interested in applying to the A*STAR scholarship. Celine will be happy (and sad, 'cos of more paperwork) to hear of this. ^____^
On Sat I was on duty off. Argh, which reminds me that from now onwards, I will go home fifteen minutes later after every duty! Went for a run, and then met up with old frens at ps. Tried the tortilla bowl at Pizza Hut - which is quite bad. The sauce that went with the tortilla chips tasted horrible, and the spaghetti was so little I was barely full after the meal. But then, ten bucks only, what more can you ask for?
Bread Talk is 4 years old already! Gave in to temptation and bought 4 buns, each for one buck, for my family.

Mom's Bdae
Everytime before the day itself, I will think of a lot of things to say to her, but on the actual day, all that pops out is a very sheepish "Happy Birthday, Mama." Hmm.
I am sleepy..
It was a busy weekend. On Sat went to work, really sian to work on a Sat. Had a late lunch, watched some tape Da-ge-Da and then left for Orchard to meet William et al. Reached early so I walked around Paragon where we were supposed to meet. Realised (again) how up-market it is. Seldom do you find Gucci beside Prada. Lol. Anyway, we adjourned to Spagghedies, where we tried the Italian chocolate Cake, which is really very good, and really very fattening. Haha, but thanks for the treat man. It's always funny to 'bully' William Hung. He is so bully-able. :P
And I can't believe there're such disgusting people who are almost adult, fat, sleep in their undies with a wet patch in front of it and don't find themselves smelly when people ask them to go take a bath.
Apparently Pes C re-course is really slack. But this time the C2 had to stay overnight outfield! Usually it's only the C1s. Damn suay. But at least they got to choose their buddies this time.
Walked around a bit, to Isetan, and then Adidas at Pacific Plaza, then Borders. The Adidas sale was quite disappointing, not much variety. Collected some Hwachong carnival tickets from a junior xz there. Haha, quite surprised that she actually emailed me through my blog to ask me to help her sell tickets. Ok, so this is an official announcement: Want tickets buy from me!! ^___^
Sunday
Gave tuition yesterday. Mom cooked laksa for lunch, and it was very good! Just before I was about to leave for Hsinghai practice, it started pouring like mad. Grr..so I had to take a bus to the interchange and take my bus from there so I could avoid the rain. I really don't like to head to town during the weekends, so crowded and all. On Sat saw a lot of VJ students basking along Orchard Road, must be raising funds or something.
I just registered with the hc alumni for fun, then I was testing out the order form when I realised I made an order for the hamper that cost 88 bucks!! For a magazine, dvd, polo tee, water bottle and bear. Hmm, should I cancel the order when they call? Or just donate the money to the school la.
Learning how to buy a laptop, can anyone help with useful links?

Getting lazy
It's been a lazy week. I am slipping into the habit of blogging only once a week. Well. It's been a rather ambiguous week, good and bad.
Sometimes, people whom you've known all your life, whom you think you can read inside out, and who in turn can read you inside out, suddenly become unreadable and apparently so unreasonable that you wonder what has gone wrong in the short span of a week. And then I start to ask what has gone wrong with myself. Taking people for granted? Or an evolving moral perspective that is no longer congruent with other's expected standards? It's not every week that a cold war erupts between two people, and it's even rarer that it happened twice in a week, but the ambiguity sets in when the next day, everything seems almost normal again. But yet it's not entirely normal. Something in the fabric of the relationship has changed. Permanently? *shrugs* But definitely, for now. :(
Argh, I am feeling sleepy these few days, although I haven't been missing much sleep, at least not much more than usual. This hints of something. And it doesn't make it any better that more and more people in my unit are falling ill these few days.
Yl has returned from Kuching. Originally arranged to meet her and Alvin on Thursday after my duty, but as Murphy's Law would have it, a family tragedy occurred and I thought it better to postpone the meeting to a later date..Ok it's a bit wrong to attribute a tragedy to Murphy's Law so I shall take that back.
Anyway I was thinking of trying Pizza Hut's latest promotion - the Tortilla Bowl. Wonder how good it is.
So instead, I followed my parents out to IMM for lunch with my 3 aunts. We had dim-sum at the Yunnan Garden Restaurant. It was located at such an isolated area in IMM that I wonder if it is that good that people will bother to go all the way to the 5th floor just to eat there. And one of my aunts got lost trying to find an ecalator leading to the floor. Luckily we took the lift. :D
The food was so-so la. I actually felt full after the lunch, but after a 2 hour nap I was starving already, so I guess it was more of a je-lat feeling after too much oily food..
Surprised to receive an sms from William Hung yesterday, asking me out for dinner. I almost forgot he is in the middle of his pes c bmt recourse, together with a number of buddies from the BASC course. Lol, imagine a botak 3SG going through BMT again, and not just one. They will have the same ranks as their sergeants.
Till the next time.

Wednesday
Wed was a boring working day. Bleah. I think on this day I saw boy with a durian-like hair style. And the spikes were damn high. A group of school girls laughed at him when he boarded the bus. lol.
Thursday
Went swimming in the late morning, before going for duty. I realised that it had been raining for the 3rd consecutive day in the early morning.
Friday
The regulars all went to Mindef for a meeting in the morning, so I was glad to reach home half an hour early. haha, but before I could sleep for long, I was woken up by my mom to follow her to town. My parents and I attended the DSTA Scholarship Ceremony at Orchard Hotel. My bro got the JC award. We reached early, and so my mom and I went to the adjacent Orchard Towers to jalan. I don't like the place at all. It's soo old and shabby and dark inside. No wonder I saw a security guy walking around the compound randomly pushing open doors leading to quiet staircases with a roving eye. But anyway, Orchard Hotel looks pretty shabby from the outside too. But inside is a totally different matter. It was a black tie affair, ok maybe not tuxedoes..but everyone was in long sleeves and a tie, any many ladies had coats on. There were 80 plus awards for this year, as compared with last year's 71. And the JC ones were quite evenly distributed: 5 RJ, 3 HC, 3 VJ, 2 NJ, 2 AC and 1 TJ.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of my CO juniors got the scholarship too - Zheng Junyi. Haha, congrats to you boy! And I also saw one of my CO seniors, Ying Kai, whom I haven't met for years. He's going to read biology at the same school as Isabel, Washington Uni. at St. Louis. All the best there! It's really quite a good school for biology, or so I heard from Isabel. Huanxi, my campmate was also there, and I saw him dance mass dance for the first time! Haha :D He looked so dazed after the whole event was over, during the tea reception. He said he thought he heard my voice somewhere. Haha. Oh ya, and AW should know that Alfonso from Cat High got the award too right? His gf sat in the row just in front of mine, and she's quite chio wor..
Saw Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean there. Almost had a chance to take photo with him except that there were so many people more actively approaching him. Met my jc vice principal, who surprisingly recognised me from the 2002 CO concert at VCH. Not bad at all! :D
Saturday
Hmm, was supposed to take ippt yesterday, but woke up damn early at 5plus am 'cos of a bad stomachache. So I told jimmy and went to office. Coincidentally, he smsed me to tell me to go office since it was raining.
In the afternoon, was supposed to attend a class gathering at China Square - Dim Sum buffet. But didn't go 'cos of the bad stomach. Argh.
Gave tuition at night. Then now..
SUNDAY DUTY AGAIN!!
Argh, this is my second Sunday duty in a row. Sucks.

Busy week
It has been another busy week, but it's almost over now.
Monday
I was on duty off. Went running after waking up and then gave tuition in the evening. Tuition is really sian. All the jc block tests had just started, my bro. too.
Tuesday
I was on one-day leave. Decided it was not very nice to request for time off from something that is optional for me, although in my case I knew I had to attend it - the 4th Biomedical Research Council Symposium "Tissue Engineering" scientific meeting at Biopolis. This is only the second time I've been to a seminar at the Matrix building, and boy, was it reaally scientific. Lol.
I had to take the MRT to Buona Vista, which absolutely sucked 'cos of the rush hour crowd. I was like kissing the glass door from the Jurong East station onwards; luckily I dropped soon after. And I kind of admire how many people had strong calf muscles such that they did not need to hold on to anything to balance themselves. I had to take 1-2 minutes to accustomise myself to not using any support.
Walking with the other working class people, I felt like I was one of them. Except the fact that everyone walks so fast. Haha, I was just strolling along. But I still reached too early. And when I went up to the 4th level, this guy called Joshua who just arrived to prepare the venue thought I was his helper!
Met people whom I haven't seen since last August, like Qiyue and Wan Yue. Met more new people like Louis, Vern, Hannah, Vivian, William and a poly guy whose name I've forgotten. Also saw Teck Chuan and Brian. Teck Chuan is now an intern at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Qiyue was saying the Principal Investigator at IBN, Jackie Ying, is very fierce. So I asked tc, and he was like "Why is everyone asking me that?" Lol. Hmm, looks like boss is a no-nonsense kind of person.
The seminar itself was pretty interesting. But a lot of it was very technical, and I didn't understand a lot of stuff. But it gave an idea of the type of work that researchers are doing now..and many of the presenters lack good communication skills. They just drone on and on. Argh. The worst was this PRC, he was very good with his knowledge (MD and PhD), but I couldn't understand a single thing he was saying!
