Delerium

Talking to yeelin online now. We're talking about this new age artist, Delerium. And she recommended a few songs that I absolutely have to listen to, I am recording them here since I was already logging on lol: Angel, Building a mystery and Fallen. And Adia too.

So far I've only heard one of her songs, 'Silence', which is on the compilation album 'Voyage 2' that I have. It's absolutely powerful and she has very strong vocals. But the lyrics seem pretty ominous to me though.

Long week

It's been a looong 7-day week, just wonder how I survived. On Friday, my branch head suddenly decided to buy lunch for the lunch duty personnel. But the nasi lemak was pretty good though.

Friday, went running after work and then had to give tuition. Damn shack. Then yesterday had to work in the morning some more. *Yawn* After booking out, Xm and I went to take a look at this U2 and G2000 warehouse sale somewhere along Genting Road in MacPherson, at the recommendation of Bl. It was surprisingly quite crowded. But there wasn't much variety though, spent a lot of time rummaging through the messy clothes and throwing clothes at other people. Lol. As usual I am a troublemaker. A discreet troublemaker. Haha no la. Got a black short sleeved collar G2000 shirt and a navy blue U2 top for just 19 bucks. Then we saw another warehouse sale at Sportslink down the road so we went in to take a look. Nothing much there too so we headed home.

Then in the evening, went to boss's BBQ dinner. A lot of guys pang seh last minute, but luckily there were still quite a number left. The recruits have some attitude problem, not that I really care too. Surprisingly we met S1 on the bus we were waiting for to get to boss's place after meeting at West Mall. S1 was heading to his place too, but when he asked if the whole group of us were going to the BBQ or not, jh and I told him we were going to Bukit Timah for dinner instead. Lol. I think he kind of believed us at first. Haha.. sigh I shouldn't make fun of people so often, although that would make things very sian and direct and straightforward and predictable.

Met Hanbin who was transferred to Gombak and Soon Wee who disrupted for medical studies. The food was not bad. Live crabs, stingray, sotong, prawns, chicken and the usual fare..ate until I was damn full. And someone came up with the ingenious idea of filling the crab shell with some of the catered seafood fried rice, and garnishing it with some grass plucked from the plants near the BBQ pit.

I left pretty early 'cos I have to be Here today. Was so lazy that I took a cab home even though it's only fifteen minutes by bus home.

Yay, tmr off at last. And I am on leave on Tuesday to attend this BMRC symposium on tissue engineering. Give me time off la...

Fly Away

Just came across this song by Corrinne May. It's melancholic, yet beautiful. Great song.

Today my boss brought Lawrence and I to Geylang to order the stuff for this Sat's BBQ at his place. I think we ordered quite little. And the salesgirl was quite weird - she kept saying we ordered too much. Where got such salesgirl one? (No, we did tell her that we're mostly young guys with big appetites.)

Then he treated us to lunch at MacPherson. Had duck rice at Cheok Kee. It was really good in my opinion. And the servings are very generous.

"Journey" is also a pretty good song by her.

Argh

It finally happened. Typing a long post and then *poof* IE decides to hang on me. I shan't even waste time typing a sad smiley in case it happens again.

Right, so what now.

Down memory lane..

Yeah I was supposed to continue from my previous post right? The disruption was due to my tuition student arriving for lesson yesterday evening. I am feeling very lethargic lately. Don't know why but I just don't feel refreshed every morning when I wake up. Nose has been feeling funny, like how you know you're on the verge of catching some virus again. And the hazy weather isn't making it much better.

Talking about haze, argh, I read somewhere there're 2000 hotspots in Sumatra. And the stupid haze caused me not to be able to visit the swimming pool this afternoon despite having taken my last precious half day because the whole world looked like it was going to rain.

Talking about haze again, my new scholarship officer is hazel...hmm. Got this tissue engineering symposium organised by the Biomedical Research Council next Tuesday. I actually received the invitation only yesterday 'cos I haven't checked my astar account for one month. But I have to take leave for it..shucks. Gonna ask xs and vera if they're going.

...Picnic

It was a good experience sharing session. Idionsyncracies of the senior Singapore students at jhu now, the Baltimore weather, food, academics were just some of them. I'm pretty curious about how bad their Chinese food tastes. Apparently, all the Americans know about it is to add lots of soy sauce and it will taste Chinese. Which reminds me of the time I had 'fried rice' in Perth during an adventure trip there. Yuck. It was sticky, cold, and sweet. In fact, it tasted more like a cold salad dish then fried rice. Argh. I don't think it was even half fried!

And Vera was thinking of learning Aikido when she goes there. She had already contacted this faculty member who has the relevant contacts. Haha, so much for Baltimore being a rather shady place. In fact, we were advised to go everywhere by car. And yeah, the run-around-naked-the-day-before-the-exams ritual also occurs at Hopkins. I last heard it happening in Harvard. Haha.

New old phone

Janan was very kind to pass me his old phone which he doesn't use anymore. My father went to get a new battery and a cover today. Argh, I still can't believe someone stole the phone from beneath my nose. Who would want a Nokia 2100, albeit a new one? Still waiting for SBS to call..haha fat hope.

Hsinghai

It's only 3 more weeks to the concert. And they've decided to add extra practices, which I can't attend of course. So minus this Sunday's duty, and I can attend a grand total of 2 more practices before the final rehearsal. Well, it's not the first time with so little practice anyway...*shrug*

Had a little jap lesson with st. Here's a summary of what I learnt in 10 minutes:
sumimasen - sorry
gomanasai - excuse me
ohaiyogozaimasu - gd morning
oyasuminasai - gd night
sayonara - byebye (hey i knew this)

Okay, this is in addition to the only two other words in my severely limited Japanese vocabulary - Pak*yro and Futum*ra. Okie, I know they're not very nice..

Tomorrow will be a less hazy day. My nose itches!

JHU SSA picnic

I was on duty off last Sat. Couldn't sleep much before waking up and setting off for East Coast to meet fellow Johns Hopkins students there. I think I had my first ba4 zhang3 for the year..made by my 3rd maternal grandaunt, which was pretty good for a first-timer! To date I have already eaten 7. Haha. In fact I just had 2 for dinner.

But anyway, I was considering the many ways to reach east coast: the MRT, the long bus ride (but I don't need to change bus), the shorter bus ride (but have to change buses) or the taxi. I chose the long bus route in the end 'cos I was lazy to change bus at crowded Orchard and I had the bus concession to make good use of.

So I reached Eunos MRT, and decided to hail a cab 'cos it was getting late. Took like 20 minutes to get one! The uncle was nice to charge me 5 bucks instead of 5:20.

There were 8 of us altogether. Brian and Weijie were the seniors in freshman and sophomore years respectively. Too bad Qiyue had to watch some arts fest musical..Brian's also an Astar scholar, whereas Weijie is a PSC scholar. Woah. Top VJ student some more. There was also Teck Chuan, my 79 senior, and Aaron, the organiser. Then we had 3 girls from RJ, Vera, Xiao Sai and Qing Ying. Almost all the juniors are Astar scholars too! Haha, JHU's gonna be flooded with them soon. Vera's very bubbly and very enthusiastic too. The girls were very nice to get the stuff for the picnic beforehand. Actually it was supposed to be cycling cum bbq, but then cycling was deemed too troublesome when we had to tend to the bbq so it was taken out, then we could not get a pit last minute so it became a picnic. But then with so few of us, a picnic was much better as we could spend more time communicating instead of worrying about whether the fire is going off.

Okie, the urge suddenly stopped. So this post will end prematurely here.

That day, Juliana was telling me how the guys in her faculty are so matured in their thinking, and how on the contrary, guys in NS are still so childish and ignorant of the impending challenges they face in the near future. It was actually a joke poking at one of my usual antics, but it did set me thinking. I appreciate it a lot when sometimes, a close friend accidentally makes a point about me that is so true and obvious, yet has not been directly shoved into my face before, although in my subconscious mind, I am subtly aware of it.

I saw a quote some time back that goes to the tune of "A good friend who points out your bad points may cease to be one."

It takes an open-minded person, one who is consciously trying to improve himself, to really appreciate an honest jibe by a close friend. Only close friends have that privilege actually. If an acquaintance told you something bad about yourself, the first thing you would probably think is that he is so insensitive, inconsiderate, or even bordering on intrusive on your own character. And of course, you won't take what that acquaintance said very seriously. That's why most acquaintances don't bother to tell you anyway. But if a close friend were to tell you the same thing, it shows that he cares, he wishes for you to improve as a person. And the onus is on you to gallantly accept the opinion and reflect on yourself as a person. Of course, you could go down the defensive route and argue your way out of the bad point about yourself, but that does not change the fact that people see that bad point in you. You're just drawing a curtain across the mirror image of yourself, your personal mirror. Close friends still see that in you; not-so-close friends may see that too if they are the more observant types.

"Once bitten, twice shy." A close friend may just stop telling you your bad points, and when that stage is reached, he is a close friend no more. He becomes another acquaintance. You lose a friend.

That's how I interpret the statement "A good friend who points out your bad points may cease to be one."

If that statement ever applies to me, friends, please give me a knock on the head.

Hung's coming

Goodness I don't even wanna think about it - Channel 8 news just said that William Hung is coming to Singapore in September.

Singapore Arts Fest

What a bad year. I didn't have the time to catch a single Arts Fest event despite the fact that I had the Arts Fest privilege card! Hai, I just saw the closing performance in Yishun on Channel 8 news. Some Korean troupe combining both traditional and avant garde themes. I have always felt that this is the way the arts should go - to the masses. As long as more people are exposed to it, although in turn a smaller proportion will actually appreciate it, that's what the spirit of art should be: to share with others and to evolve as a result of interactions with other parties, whether laymen or the arty-farty. A few years ago, I caught the Arts Fest closing performance outside Lot One Shopper's Mall because it was near my place, and there were fireworks too.

Tian Lai Hui Ying

Which reminds me of the HCCO concert last Sat. It was a remarkable effort in my opinion. Imagine having to prepare two sets of songs for two concerts that take place within two months of each other - a potential nightmare.

Of course, to my ear, there were lots of typical blemishes that distinguished the best JC chinese orchestra from a professional one. But to put my shoes in many of the less experienced performers on stage, it was indeed not easy. And judging from the responses by some members of the audience, I can only conclude that they have even less polished ears than mine. Haha, but who cares? The audience is the king - as long as they enjoyed it, it was a job well done. And damn, those people really should have attended the concert my batch presented in 2002; I think it's still the best ever.

Chinatown Night Market

It opens tonight with 88 new stalls opening their shutters for business, according to ChannelNewsAsia. I wonder how long they will survive. Actually, they will survive, as long as the government makes a conscious effort to promote Chinatown as a tourist attraction. I am wondering how long the authenticity, if any, of the olden Chinatown will last, or will the revamped Chinatown fall into the commercial trap of catering solely to foreign tourists and lose any local charm it was supposed to possess.

I like going to Chinatown. Although it's very tourist-oriented nowadays, I still like going there. One year ago, I treated my grandpa to lunch at 'Yum-Cha', the first and last time his grandson gave him a treat... Two years ago, I was attached to this Chinese arts society, can't remember the name. I was part of this small Chinese instrumental ensemble that was accompanying many famous singers for a concert. Chinese New Year is another reason for going there. Though the goodies are no longer cheaper there as compared with other 'heartland' sources, the atmosphere is still inevitably thicker in Chinatown itself.

And of course, who can forget the food. The claypot rice, and the Koo Kee yong tau foo are the two most famous food I can think of.

I don't think there's a Chinatown in Baltimore. However, the other day I was flipping through the latest (June) issue of National Geographic and it came with one of its trademark super-informative maps; this particular one was of Washington DC, and the Chinatown is quite big. It's in the vicinity of the White House and the US Capitol, but of course the map covers a very large area..

Best news in 2004

This has to qualify as the best news so far this year; I don't know what could be better news than having 2 months of my NS liability shaved off. So I ORD on 26Apr2005, no more 26Jun2005! Woohoo~~ That's only ten more months or so...

Haha, my brother will get to serve only two years as he will enlist only in 2006.

Anyway, spread the good news!

Those who enlist between Jun'04 and Dec'04 will get 4 months off.

That makes those who enlisted in Apr'04 the most suay of all..

Repercussions

Of course, it's highly possible that ten years down the road, they'll revert back to 2.5 years NS..when they realise that the plunging fertility level is taking its toll on the population of young males.

So now I have 5 months of freedom before flying to Baltimore instead of 3. That's a substantial period of time to rot away, so I guess rotting's out of the question. It's almost half a year. Get a job? Do volunteer work? Hmmm..now the options are so much wider..

12.6.04

It's been a long week without duties, at last it's over! This week has been a bad week, but also good in some ways.

Yesterday S1 treated us to goreng pisang, 'cos he's going to clear leave soon. Sigh, many senior going to clear leave soon, quite sad.

Have been busy at work, and have to contend with organising the anniversary too.

Watching the HCCO concert at VCH later, and meeting 3 generations of HCCO exco for dinner in town later. Woohoo~

Tomorrow got duty, although it's a Sunday I am still looking forward to it. *Shrug* Don't ask me why. The schedule is damn screwed up, including tomorrow I have 3 duties in the coming week. No duties this week, and no duties the whole of next week again. Argh. Gonna continue playing Chrono Trigger the whole day..hah.

Although they gave us back the Jun lwe, it doesn't mean I have forgotten what had happened this week. They are just stupid and refuse to admit it. Always try to tekan us, but every single time I've got my section and myself covered, so they also have nothing to say. Quite loserish in my opinion, but well, that's their only source of job satisfaction..and anyway, I think Jul's lwe is still gone.

Watched the taped version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on Thu evening. Haha ya I am damn late or slow but I was never inclined to watching it in the first place 'cos I thought it was some thrashy children's show. I only watched it 'cos it's free, and I think it's a pretty good movie after all, although I still stand by my conviction that it's just a children's show. It's a pretty good children's show.

Finally got a hair cut on Wed. My hair's so long that I swear for once I won't blame RSM for picking on me if he caught me for my hair. It was quite funny that evening 'cos when I reached the barber's the main steel gate was already pulled shut; the 3 uncles were preparing to close shop and were finishing up two mre customers. But I frantically waved at them and gestured animatedly, so in the end I got in and they grudgingly cut my hair. Haha. And some people say it doesn't look much shorter than before. Darn.

Lunch time.

Screwed up as usual

People who take pride in scolding others for slacking when they are the ultimate slackers - who else but the regulars.

If you ask why we ate lunch so late, ask yourself who was hogging the bloody pantry till our lunch time was over. And if you ask why didn't we eat even though you were in the pantry, ask yourself why is it that no one wants to be in the same pantry as you.

Of course I will just ignore them and pretend nothing has happened, I don't give a fuck as long as I ORD in around one year. EQ rules. But sometimes, some people don't deserve to be treated nicely.

2.6.04

Happy Vesak Day

Somehow I have a feeling that this is not how you greet someone with regards to Vesak Day. But that's how I will greet them nonetheless.

Today I watched Shrek 2, pretty ok lah. Haha, what totally cracked me up was the Puss in Boots, when it acted cute near the end.

On Monday we had some unit Cohesion Lunch. Can't believe they actually think that the unit's cohesion will improve with one simple catered lunch. But anyway, the food was quite average too. Can't complain la huh, we have to save some of the welfare fund for July's anniversary. Anyway, when there's food, we eat. And slack at the same time too, so I don't mind if they do this more frequently. They even screened Pirates of the Carribean for us after lunch. Damn welfare haha. But we could only watch it halfway 'cos had to get back to work. Damn stupid. And they didn't show the rest the next day as promised.

Tuesday was the last day I was the parade commander. I did it despite it being against protocol because tecko asked me to, and I thought hell give him a chance because he gave me and boliang a lift back to the office after lunch that day. Well, of course I know it's because of boliang that he bothered to stop..*shrug*

Sian, today my tutee cancelled the lesson last minute again, said he had food poisoning. Well, gave him the benefit of the doubt. No choice what..

Feeling hardworking these two days. Was reading a paper on the medical advances this decade when I realised a lot of the stuff I didn't know. So found a very good updated website which had a lot of useful information on the topic of immunity. I was always interested in this subject, but it was always covered in a very tangential way in secondary school and JC biology. Now that explains why..bugged my NUS friend for notes on monoclonal antibodies. Hehe.
