I hate headaches..this one has lasted since Sunday. Feels like I'm gonna have a headache forever

28.4.04

Yo, it's Wed and I am finally back at work..was on one day MC yesterday. Woke up with a splitting headache (as usual) plus a sore throat and a blocked nose, so decided that I had to report sick. So started the long wait at the polyclinic. As usual, had to wait seemingly long for my turn..why do people with queue numbers way behin mine invariably get to see their doctors first? My doctor was a nerdy looking guy. Hope my frens don't turn out like him..and must be more efficient! Else people who need to get treated will always get sicker by the minute as they mingle at the waiting area with other sick people. Well, this time I only waited about an hour and a half for my turn; last year I waited for two and a half agonizing hours!

Went to Hougang Mall for lunch just now as hx has the car today. Ate at the food court at the top floor. The Thai-style chicken rice was not bad, but the combination of spiciness and heat did not make it a very cooling affair.. Saw this quite chio bu who was alone at first, then later was joined by who seemed to be a guy. But someone pointed out that that 'guy' looked like a female...so we concluded they were a lesbian couple. Haha. Whatever.

Hmm, last week passed by in a flash, but this week seems much longer...but at least my MC shaved off another day of the long long week, and this Sat's a holiday. yay~ May's duty schedule looks bad; I only have 4 duties....:(

Gave tuition on Friday. These days my tutees look so tired when they come, and sometimes even irritable. I can understand how the stress of studying in Singapore is getting to them, what with one of them having the Os this year, one struggling in jc and the other trying to get into the Nanyang Girls' Intergrated Program the next year. Which makes me wonder exactly how un-stressful it is to study in the US.

Went to a coursemate's place on Sat. She gave birth one month ago and was throwing a Man3 Yue4 feast at her mother's place at Jurong East..a few of us arranged to meet at Chinese Gardens MRT. I didn't expect that two guys picked us up in the end, and in 2 Mercedes some more. Haha. Not bad huh. But one of them got lost at the International Business Park near IMM..*dang* I've almost forgotten how small babies are till I saw the fragile Danzel..some of the guys have already been promoted on 16Apr, 'cos they're division clerks.

I'm back! And so, yeah we headed to the Esplanade for the Hwa Chong Combined CO Concert. It's my first full concert in the Concert Hall. Saw many Chinese High teachers there, but not many Hwachong ones. Said hi to Mr. Chung and Mr. Tan. The concert itself was okay. The Chinese High CO attempted much harder songs than Hwachong CO, and that's why maybe they sounded more amateurish than the latter. Saw many old frens from CO too. Feeling a bit old, 'cos when everyone was cheering the HwaChong cheers at the end, for the first time I didn't feel inclined to join in.

Thought of catching up with the exco after the concert, but unfortunately yh had to book in by that evening, so yeha next time then.

Oh yah! I saw Nancy Tay with her 4 children before the concert. She looks super glamorous in her elegant black dress. And her children were all equally (over-) well dressed for the occasion. Over-dressed not because the Esplanade is not a high-class enough place, but because it's a school concert after all, and like 90% of the audience was comprised of school-going kids, the most under-dressed ones turned up in berms even. But again, I was under dressed too, cos I just didn't feel like dressing up that day.

Reached home late. Shack ah. Then yesterday met sq, alw and st at NUS. Quite extra actually, but no choice cos they had to go to this medicine book fair and sq had to get her laptop fixed as it had 11 viruses. So we ate at the NUH food court, before strolling over to the med faculty where I saw a number of familar faces, one of whom made me glad that I ain't going to nus...

Then it rained damn heavily. Adjourned to Lot One where we went to K-Box. My first visit there actually, or to any KTV actually. It was Alvin's like 7th visit to a KTV since his exams ended..haha. Imagine spending 70 over bucks on karaoke in like 2 weeks!! *heart break*

It's Friday already! Had my weekend early this week. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Well, I don't have a weekend this week because I am working tomorrow and on Sunday as well.

Tuesday's duty was very funny. Fh and I started talking about ghosts and all the supernatural stuff when I asked him a seemingly innocuous question: Have you watched Dawn of the Dead? Haha, then from like 8 plus to midnight we ended up talking all about it, and freaking ourselves out. Even had to go toilet together. Wahaha, it's not the same talking about ghosts at home or in school as compared to in camp in an ulu part of Singapore in the dead of the night.

In the end I didn't sleep very much. Lol. Asked for it right. Laugh some more.

I slept a lot on Wednesday..woke up at like 2 plus to eat lunch. Then at four plus went to Marina Square with my mom to eat dinner. The food court was so empty. Had fried rice with fried fish fillet, which was average only lah. Then went jalan-jalan as it was still early. Didn't bump into Yaohao and the rest although later I learnt that they were around the area too. Went to World of Sports and bought a new pair of goggles. I lost my old pair at the pool on Tuesday. =( But then again that one was super old, have been using it since P4!! That's more than 10 years old! Actually I was just looking around, cos I was sure I could get a better bargain somewhere else, but who asked the salesman to be so garang, come and ask me what I am looking for and then recommending a -4.00 pair of goggles. Then again, at 29.90, I don't think I will get a pair of goggles with degree for much lower a price.

20.4.04

Monday passed in a flash. Don't rem much of it.

On duty now. Went swimming today and it was damn hot.

Today is not a very good day, but never mind. It's one of those days when you just lose every bit of confidence you have in yourself.

There's a course gathering this Sat to visit Jess, who just gave birth last month. Man3 Yue4 liao. Then after that we're supposed to go to Janni's place for a bbq party to celebrate her 21st b'dae. Darn, why must I be on duty on Sunday such that I have to change the Sunday tuition to Saturday evening?

The Nicoll Highway collapsed not so long ago, or rather part of it. It caused power failures in the immediate vicinity, and I heard on NewsRadio 93.8 that even the Esplanade is affected! Dunno how true it is but I hope it's false, cos HCCO's having their concert rehearsal there this evening and the concert's tomorrow!! Better not affect them. Looking forward to meeting the Exco again though..the last time was last Dec. Bleah

Talking about blackouts, the last one that occurred last week over quite a large area did get me thinking: how're we going to respond to a terror attack that begins with a major blackout? It's one of those sure-fire ways of foreign forces invading our tiny country..with no power we can't do anything, can't mobilise the army, can't communicate with the masses, can't even hold an emergency meeting to discuss what to do next cos the traffic lights ain't working..... It's just like how the US jammed the electronic radars of the Iraqis before the Gulf War (forgot whether it was the first or second), before launching a full-scale invasion, with the Iraqis left helpless to anticipate the US' every move. Well, just have to hope it doesn't happen..

This post sounds so gloomy...never mind. Tmr will be a better day.

Yo..it's been a really loong weekend for me..and I have thoroughly enjoyed this break. My tutee cancelled on me today, leaving me the whole weekend free as a result.

Met up with sw, xc, jack and hb yesterday, 3 of whom disrupted for medical studies last july, and the last one who's (permanently) attached to the director of jid. At last, returned sw his sister's Winter Sonata vcds..haha after like a year!!

I was damn early, so I went to PS to jalan-jalan. So early, not many people around. Then I took the mrt to Orchard to meet them. Sw arrived the earliest, so we chit-chatted a little, interrupted thrice by very enthusiastic salesmen, 2 of whom were trying to peddle the same product to us, and a lady who tried to sell us this discount card for some dessert shop at PS, claiming it is 'transfettable' (that's what she pronounced 'transferrable' as), and that part of the proceeds go to charity (30% if I rem correctly). Haha, at first I was patiently listening to the first perfume salesman, waiting for a suitable chance to siam, but this stupid salesman started to apply the perfume on my wrist with his bare fingers! In Tim's words, "I feel violated.." :D, and I decided to play my trump card. "Er, sorry but I've already bought this perfume before" I said as apologetically as I could muster myself to be. Hahaha. And the guy bought my explanation and left. For the lady I wasn't so successful in smoking her..I said something really lame, like "Oh..but I am flying overseas in two weeks, so it's a waste of money.." And she was quick to say that "But I told you the card's 'transfettable' what.." *Stunned* So we ended it the usual way, "Sorry we're not interested" which seems rather rude and tactless to me, but we were too sian to really care.

Anyway, I was quite amused later by how xc turned away an old Indian lady selling us tissue packets. He waved and said 'byebye' curtly to her and continued sms-ing. It's effective, but she gave a not-so-nice look at him before turning away. Well, it depends on one's style lar, it's my style not to disappoint people so much..haha but xc said that he doesn't like to lie to people, which is fair enough. *Shrugs*

So four of us minus hb ate at Pastamania at Cine, the creamy chicken is supposedly nice but I didn't really fancy its combination of herbs...gave me a slightly nauseous feeling after eating the whole plate. And I know I won't be eating it again very soon...but then again, that's what you get with cheap pasta.

And then we couldn't figure out what to do after lunch. Checked out the movies, the bowling rates, discussed the KTV rates..finally decided that pool was the cheapest since there wasn't anything all of us were particularly good at or fancied doing. Same old sleazy cuppage plaza. Hb finally joined us after our first game was almost over. We all played quite suckily, but then it was us who added to the variety of shots in the place leh. *Grin* More interesting mah. There was this game I played with Jack when we were all freaking off-form, and entered the white ball 3 times in succession...damn sia suay. Actually on hindsight it's not that easy also. Worse still, xc had to keep on shooting the white ball off the pool table, the 3rd time all the way to underneath the other table! Hahaha, can't forget how he was trying to hide under our table...

Yeah, it was a pretty normal sat at orchard...

Watched a bit of the NKF just now, the 'horny' performance by Gurmit and MArk LEe was surprisingly refreshing..they really should have more of such stuff. Entertaining but not in the "Fear Factor" fashion. Yeah. And the abseiling stuff at Bishan was pretty cool too!

Wah, today I set a new record. I ran from my home all the way to Bukit Batok Driving Centre, and beyond a bit, and back! Ok lah, it's not that far, but by Shengyong's standards, it's far enough. :P

Came across this quote:

"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time."

-- Bertrand Russell

Hmm, quite true lah. Then again, what most people mean by 'wasted' time is time that was 'not productive' though it might have been enjoyable, not in the usual sense of 'wasted' which implies totality i.e. 'really never accomplished anything no matter how unproductive that thing may be'.

But I am starting to hate how they put names to these quotes as if it's something damn great to say by a great person.

Just watched "Blue Print 2 - Princess Moon" on Channel 5. It's a very simple, yet effective, short love story in a local setting of a 13yo boy and a 13yo girl. It was quite the typical 'unfulfilled love' story, except that this story was totally in the eyes of a 13yo boy, with him narrating throughout the piece for added effect. "Her skin was white like...beancurd." "Her hair was black like...chin chow." The apparent simplicity of life to a prepubescent teen, who realises that approaching adulthood isn't such a simple thing after all. It was touching, to say the least, probably because everyone who watched it had experienced the same nagging pangs not so long ago.. "How does a girl pee?" Such childish phrases are utilised to effect, without overdoing it, which makes the reminiscence all the more authentic and close to heart.

"How do you measure love?"

"It's measured by the hole it leaves in you. That day, she left a crater in my heart..."

I'll always remember the last words of the love-lorn 13yo..every word resonates with immeasurable significance that started building up since the very first minute of the less-than-an-hour long story. It's rare that a short clip like this is not weighed down by irrelevancy (many similar stories suffer from too much out-of-point scenes that do not contribute to the climax, or even the plot, in any way.

In other news, came across this amusing quote:

"A celebrity is a person who works hard all his life to become well known, then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized."

-- Fred Allen

Another of those simple truths that people always overlook in the pursuit of something else more important, like being well known.

Earlier, caught the '30 Minutes of Fame' too. Pretty cool concept, but hardly a gem.

Really gotta thank my tutee for cancelling lessons last minute because PJ's having a mass exercise. Hehe.

15.4.04

I am uncharacteristically sleepy right now. Sigh, dunno why so tired suddenly.

Anyway, today is quite a good duty, although there seemed to be more work than usual. But I accomplished a number of things:
1. Mastered Qing Tian, after overcoming the very hard B7 and the easier D7 chords.
2. Actually come to think of it, nothing else.

But I received an sms from Richie, who has been shortlisted for the final round interview for this year's A*STAR scholarship...YAY!! ^______^ Really hopes he makes it past Philip Yeo's glib tongue and ends up in JHU with me! Good luck good luck.. Well, it appears that A*STAR let him skip all the other rounds of interviews this time round, since he had already reached the final round last year, just to be 'thrown out' at the last minute by Philip Yeo just because he hasn't taken his SAT II. How inflexible could he get? Hmm, and to think that Richie was about to give up hope on them ever selecting him for it again...

Just got news from qy that 15 Singaporeans have been accepted into JHU this fall! Woohoo~~so I won't be so lonely there next year..3 have already paid the deposits. Which means not all 15 will end up there...but oh well better than nothing. And my 79 senior is flying there this year too!

[tbc..]

Received an sms from sw askin when to meet. So this sat. At where? Haha, Orchard lor..no new ideas man. Jack still hasn't received my sms. I've been turning down too many people recently. Thrice just last week!! Feel bad. Next week's gonna be a busy week. Most of the nusians would have finished with their exams and we're going out next thursday.

Okay, I am too sleepy to continue. Good morning. It's 0004h now. Agnes just went to her bunk. *Shiver*

14.4.04

Okay, decided to start a new post 'cos the time lag between this post and the last was too long..

Anyway, the bbq was fun, and it's quite sad that it's probably going to be the last time that all the senior guys have fun together before the bulk of them ORD come june...:( After getting drinks we watched Aston Villa v.s Chelsea the first half before heading home. The car I was in, we wanted to go to PIE, but got lost and ended up at Kallang River, National Stadium and then Suntec. Wahaha. Was damn tired when I reached home. Plonked on the bed straight after a hot bath and woke up at 5 plus feeling not refreshed at all...haha. Couldn't even open my eyes fully for the first five minutes!! Was like forcing myself awake by 'water torture'.

Well, so Tuesday passed very fast. 'Cos I spent most of the day playing Pokemon. Haha..too sian la. Today was Sonic the Hedgehog. Tmr's duty. Don't think got much time to play. Prefer to sleep instead. Hehe. And darn!!! I am supposed to make an overseas call tmr night..sigh.

Plus I suddenly found myself sitting on the Welfare committee of my unit. Wah..welfare clerk. And at the first meeting today with the S1, I found myself having to locate a durian caterer for the proposed durian party, some LIFE activity crappy shit. And having to call SAFRA Toa Payoh to enquire about their facilities for archery, bowling and the unit's anniversary lunch. Argh. And I have to survey the guys in the office on their opinion of forking out 7 bucks for a unit photo. Haha, sounds damn fun. Yeah, damn 'fun'.

Listening to Bach's Violin Concerto No. 5 in E Major now. Actually it's the midi version, but it's better 'cos it elucidates all the notes very distinctly. I am learning how to play this piece on the erhu now. Wah, damn hard. 'Cos of my lack of western music background, I ain't exactly very acquainted with the western 12-note scale v.s the pentatonic scale that most Chinese music employs.

Which reminds me, tmr must practise Qing Tian on the guitar. Heh heh. How can don't practise my favourite song?

And yes, I have to get the scores from pb's mum for the july concert. Heard we're playing a piece by Tan Dun, the guy who writes notoriously hard pieces, and is the composer of the soundtrack for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Lee Ang.

Hmm, was trying to read a commentary on 'Cancer, Apoptosis and nonimmune surveillance' but realised I couldn't get anything into my head 'cos of:
1. LOS
2. Brain-block after tuition
3. SO FREAKING HOT!!!

I am not a very 'warm' person. I prefer cold. Or cool. I am so missing the weather that we used to experience in Dec.

Argh, so hot. The moment I stepped out of the bath, I start to sweat again. But back to the topic, today I received a mail from Nature about a free copy of the digital version of the April issue of Nature magazine..must download a 10MB installer to read it!! Damn..tried installing it in camp but as usual too many firewalls..nvm will try it tmr. Wow, I mean it's damn zai to have the whole 1000 pages of the magazine available in digital form. I should really ask a*star's celine to see if i can obtain the soft copy from home instead of having to trudge down to Biopolis just to access their library there, which I haven't had time to do.

Good night. Tomorrow will be a colder day.

Have been suffering from LOS these two days. AW once mentioned that sleep debts have to be repaid. Well, I think it applies to me man. Only slept like 4 hours on Monday night, and last night there was a stupid black out at 11 plus. It was so warm that the air-con was switched on. And I was sweating so much that my mum had to wipe my sweat for me and woke me up in the process.

Monday was Ra's 21st b'dae, and he invited us to his place, Paradise Palms, which was all the way at TKGS! Ok, so I was figuring out the whole day at work how to get home by bus from there, when someone suddenly mentioned 31 passes there. Then I was trying to figure out how long the journey on 31 to Toa Payoh would be, and subsequently the 985 journey to my place. But turned out I didn't need to worry, 'cos suddenly everyone was going to drive there. :D

The b'dae boy was on half-day, and when I saw him on msn at 2 plus, wanted to jokingly tell him not to slack and go prepare for the party, but then not nice la people treating you after all, and online can't really tell whether ur really joking or not...Anyway, we were like just-ORDed NSFs when we booked out in CVs in a boisterous group. Reached his house quite early, and whiled away time playing basketball, playing playground or talking cock as his parents were preparing the bbq. His place is an a unit in a single block of apartments which he says isn't exactly a condo, hmm yeah anyway it doesn't seem like the usual condo, more like those refurbished apartments with the addition of amenities like a small swimming pool (and I really mean small..it's about the width of a medium-sized canal; only 2 people can swim comfortably side to side from end to end as opposed to the 8 lanes in a standard pool), half a basketball court, a tennis court and a small playground. Later in the evening, some of us took a dip in the pool. It was refreshing, despite the fact that it is situated beside the road and under constant scrutiny from the guardhouse of the apartment beside it. Too bad no one got dunked in the pool. Heh.

The food was okay, even had stingray and lamb chops. After dinner, lots of basketball for some and some more talking cock, some of us adjourned to the Shell petrol kiosk nearby to get some drinks. It was quite cock for like 7-8 people squeezing into a small mart at 9 plus in the evening. Was exchanging some horror stories with fh, and it wasn't very nice thinking about a spear-like object shooting out of a water cooler through your body when ur trying to drink from it (or how about some blood first?) Or about the preservation of the brains of corpses for 3-4 hours right after death, so that the bodies can be controlled at will.

World's oldest mouse turns 4
The Associated Press
13 Apr 2004
From correspondents in Ann Arbor, Michigan

A DWARF mouse named Yoda has celebrated his fourth birthday, making him the oldest of his kind and far beyond 100 in human years, the University of Michigan Medical School says.

Yoda owes his longevity to genetic modifications that affected his pituitary and thyroid glands and reduced insulin production - and which left him a third smaller than an average mouse and very sensitive to cold.

On the other hand, at the human equivalent of about 136 years, Yoda is still mobile, sexually active and "looking good," said Dr. Richard A. Miller, associate director of research at the school's geriatrics centre.

Yoda lives in a carefully maintained lab with roughly 100 other male geriatric mice being used for a lifespan study. An average lab mouse lives slightly more than two years.

Yoda's cage mate, named Princess Leia after another Star Wars character, is a much larger female who uses her body warmth to keep the dwarf mouse from freezing to death.

Researchers are studying the genetic mutants to determine how altered hormone levels can slow the aging process, with the hope of figuring out which methods, if any, eventually could be applied to humans.

Watched the NKF show, or part of it, last night. I think the antics are getting too ridiculous for their purpose. Esp. those potentially life-threatening ones like Sharon Au's stunt of sitting on knife blades. And the shooting of blow-darts on the back of He Yao Shan. I think simple and more docile performances like folding balloons by Fan-fan will suffice. After all, I wanna donate out of pure altruism and not sheer pity for the performers.

Was chatting with my ex-unit-buddy over the weekend, who's in med. Wah, really long time never see him.

Some of my juniors got into OCS. Happy for them. But some didn't make it, despite high (personal) expectations to have done so. Of course there's this kokanadan who sabotaged his own chances 'cos he wasn't interested in being an officer and ended up a tank driver. Hahaha. Damn funny imagining the small-sized white-faced him driving a big tank.

Argh, this is a sian week.

Fat cat goes on hunger strike
Reuters/10Apr2004

An obese German cat six times the normal weight has gone on a hunger strike at a Berlin animal shelter after being taken from his owner who had fed him two kilograms of mince daily.

Mikesch, weighing 18.5 kilograms, was brought to the animal shelter on April 1.

German newspaper Bild reported he was so overweight he could not take more than four steps without becoming exhausted.

His elderly owner was at the same time taken to a nursing home.

Shelter officials say six-year-old Mikesch is so fat he cannot clean himself and suffers from heart trouble.

They say he feels lost without his meat-feeding owner and stopped eating altogether when he was put on a diet to gradually lose weight.

Shelter head Carola Ruff says a shelter worker will take Mikesch home with her for 10 days to help get his appetite back.

"The cat had a good night in her flat on the first night and that's giving us hope his condition will improve," Ms Ruff said.

Cats usually weigh between three and six kilograms and eat no more than about 300 grams of food each day.

Yo, the Duty is almost over. It's my shift now, and everyone else is probably sleeping. Listening to S.E.N.S's 'The Heart's Voice' now. It's beautiful.

Went to the pantry to make myself a cup of bittergourd tea. And I killed a lizard in the process. I was filling my cup with hot water from the dispenser to rinse it, and pouring it into the sink, something crawled up the wall of the sink to escape the hot water. And I realised it was a lizard. Was quite stunned by the lizard. What's with lizards, hell, that's the second one I've seen in the office today. So I rinsed my cup with cold water and hot water a few more times, and I realised the lizard didn't crawl further up the wall, it had died. The last time I poured room temperature water directly over it so that it's tiny body was swept to the sink, so it won't be so frightening to the next user of the sink. (I mean, it's further from the person than if it were perched halfway up the wall, I figured.) Sigh......I feel like a murderer. =( Actually, I am a murderer.

I wonder if the bittergourd tea is still drinkable.

I wonder if I still dare to sleep later.

Never mind. Time to change cd. Voyage 2 now.

On duty now. Kinda sian. Waiting for lunch to arrive.

Yesterday was a monotonous Good Friday. Woke up at 9 plus, realised was supposed to give tuition at 10am. Then after lunch, wanted to go swimming, but the weather was grey and not really appealing, so I decided to wait a while. And then I heard it - thunder. =( Then it progressed into a full-fledged thunderstorm. As usual. Well, so I did some simple set training at home.

Then evening, gave tuition again. Bah, what a productive Good Friday.

At least there's a Sunday to look forward to tomorrow. And Monday's a fren's b'dae party. Woohoo.

Wah, damn hungry now. Yesterday's lunch was damn bad, it was barely edible. I can't imagine anyone could bear spending so much time ordering the food, preparing it and coming up with fanciful names for the menu, and then, screw up the cooking. Argh. It's like sometimes the cookhouse is out to spite us, the patronisers. Oh well, at least today's menu says "western", or some half f***ed western as we call it. Hehe. I am hungry!!!

Yesterday supposed to go running. But we walked all the way to Air Force School and then they announced Cat I. Wth. So went home anyway.

Yay, tmr is Good Friday. But it's just another holiday for a non-Christian like me. I've gotta give tuition in the morning and the evening. Well, no choice so I ain't complaining. But then I had to turn down a request for dinner because of that. Bah. What shall I do in the afternoon? hope the sun comes out so I can go swim.

Watched the discussion forum on Channel News Asia yesterday evening where students were engaged in a discussion with the Education Minister. The Chinese High guy is my brother's ex-classmate's younger bro. I realised that many of the students were present not just because it's a good chance to discuss current school issues with him, but with an unrealistic aim or ambition: to (personally) change the education system. Rome wasn't built in a day, and what more, after Mr. Tharman's detailed analysis of the various problems raised by the questioners, I was only more convinced that many of the participants did not really appreciate the magnitude of or how general the problems raised in their questions were, and were just hoping for, or expecting, instant solutions that would be effected soon or even immediately, preferably within their last few years of school. I was rather impressed with Mr. Tharman's lucid and coherent explanations to their various questions, especially a hot topic i.e. Project Work, which I myself found was a farce in my time. But then, we were the guinea pig batch, so 'anything goes, who cares anyway?' was the prevalent attitude towards PW at that time. My impression of his response to the various hiccups expounded upon by the students was simply that it's a completely new implentation of a perhaps not-so-new concept that will required constant fine-tuning. There's no short-cut to it: one cannot use simulations to model how the PW system is going to work to instill creativity in students, the only way to go about it is to test it in the real school model. And that takes Time.

However, on hindsight, what the students mentioned are definitely factors affecting the quality of education in Singapore, I mean, that's what I will think as a student too.

Then saw Lenard playing this. Was quite grossed out by this, so here's a tamer version. For the latter my highest score was 323.3

Then Rasu sent this.

Wah, I am damn boliao today. And it's raining damn heavily.

Yo! Decided to change the background song of my blog. Was deciding between Yanni's 'Almost a Whisper', Secret Vows, Enchantment and Enya's Orinoco Flow. Haha. Guess which one I chose?

Lunch was good. Fried rice set. Haha. Sian. Today is a typically sian day. And we were having sex education lessons during lunch. Haha.

Today my boss stunned me in the morning the moment he arrived. "Shengyong, I have a project for you today which you'll present this evening." *dang!* And in the end I had to finish a whole presentation on it in less than a day. Sigh...luckily it wasn't too tough.

Played carrom during lunch, and suay suay kena scolded by the regulars. Well, it was our fault too..but who gets scolded and is still happy?

The Indon elections seem pretty peaceful till now. Well, guess it gives everyone a peace of mind, though it may be a false peace of mind. Just hope things don't go downhill from here. I can't imagine how they expect the whole country to finish voting in 6 hours! That's like wat shorter than even Singapore's election day.

Hmm, sleepy sleepy. Oh, the medicine exams have finally ended! Yay, now just waiting for the rest of nus to slip into holiday mood. The dentistry students have finished long ago I heard.

Just realised the physics book that I acquired through yl's fren is really a bargain! It was a set of two books (one text and one guide) plus a cd and it's pretty new, the 2000 edition and in pretty good condition. And I got it for half price!

Goodnight.

4.4.04

Yawn..yesterday was really a dramatic day. Experienced both ups and downs throughout the day. Still kinda tired though pretty much well-rested despite reaching home past midnight today. But I'm really happy 'cos I met so many old friends, as well as made a new one, and the best thing is that the old friends still remember you. :)

After duty, I went home to sleep. There was supposed to be a class gathering at Jason's place, but it didn't pull through...haha. SMSed my junior angel sh in the morning to ask her what time to meet and she was like "Huh? It's confirmed meh? Blah blah..." Hmmm, well actually it's quite hard too, the junior guys just got their posting, the seniors in uni are having exams. Only the nsfs are kinda slacking.. So I think it's postponed for now. At least till the next weekend, or when the long-awaited holidays finally arrive. I realise that despite not being in uni, my schedule is somewhat affected by the uni timetable. =( Studying is a blessing, but not following timetables!!!!

Couldn't really sleep despite my LOS the previous night. Suffered from sleep paralysis AGAIN in camp. Argh, hate it. It's becoming a ritual; every duty I will suffer from bouts of paralysis, and I am like drifting between dreamland and the real world. It's a total waste of time! I mean, if I don't sleep, at least I can do something like play games or chat online etc, which is more constructive than lying there and wondering, Hmmm...when can I move again? Or at least IF I sleep, I get rested yeah? And I never experience sleep paralysis anywhere else, or for that matter, throughout my whole life.

Woke up at one, ate lunch and then watched Zhang Fei and then Jacky Wu on tape. Sian. But didn't feel inspired to do anything else either...then when I was about to leave at 4 plus it started raining like mad! Talk about Murphy's Law, I've always believed in it, but I also believe in something quite the opposite: If you want something really badly, you'll get it somehow if you 'wanted' it badly enough. I've expounded on this before..figure it yourself blog.

Well, decided to take a feeder service to Lot One to catch the 190 from the interchange, 1) so I won't have to cross the road to take it and get wet, and 2) so I can assure myself of a seat. 190 is just mad, my bus stop is the 3rd one from the interchange, and on Sat evenings it just gets jammed packed at the THIRD bus stop. Imagine the 20 something bus stops after that. People just can't even get on. So I did. Got a seat as expected haha. Decided to msg yl, who I was going to meet for the concert. She just finished her first paper, and was feeling reeaaaaaallly bad cos of her sinus that's acting up again. It was 4:40.

Here begins the sad part of my day. Since she sounded so ill, I actually asked her to stay home if she wasn't feeling well. And after that she like didn't respond to any of my calls or smses at all, despite me receiving the reports and voicemails..At first I thought, oh well, I asked her to stay at home so I shouldn't be grumbling, except for the fact that I would have to waste one ticket and watch the concert by myself. But then the thing was she didn't even reply to confirm if she really wasn't going to meet me. So I waited at City Hall for a good 45 minutes, strolling around the place aimlessly like some punk with nothing better to do. And then she still didn't reply! Hmm, I was just about to get pissed with her when I told myself this is uncharacteristic of her, and if I thought I knew her well enough, she didn't do this on purpose. So a million thoughts raced through my mind. Did she lose her phone? If she lost her phone, at least she would turn up at City Hall, and I would have found her as I've walked round the whole place? Thrice? Or maybe something happened to her on the way? Argh, I shan't go into the vivid details of my imagination. But I was worried. Then I started to get pissed again. It was fluctuating between almost getting pissed, confused and genuinely worried.

At a certain point in time, around 6:15, I decided to call my mom. And I invited her to come for the concert. Haha. Abit funny la, but I didn't wanna waste the ticket so yeah. And by this time I've decided that yl probably was sleeping at home or something, cos she was heading to pgp right after the exam, so that eased my mind a bit. It's really a bad feeling not knowing what happened to somebody when the phone is working but no one is receiving...

SO, I took the mrt one station down to raffles city to grab dinner at the Mac along Boat Quay. Walked along the river where I was literally the odd one out cos everywhere were lovey-dovey couples lounging by the river. Plus some kids.

I took the dinner out, wondering why the few times I patronised that Mac, the same number of times I saw a police car right outside its entrance, as though waiting for something to happen. And as I was walking along Cecil Street munching on my burger, watching two teens rollerskating down the street, back and forth, debating what to do next, she finally called. Phew! She, like i thought, kinda fainted after taking some medication and was feeling better after a snooze. Then I had to call my mum, who luckily hasn't left Lot One yet. It was 6:45.

We were supposed to meet at Tanjong Pagar at 7:30, so I had lots of time. Decided to take a stroll down to Tanjong Pagar, since it wasn't really very far when you've got more than half an hour. Walked past Caltex House, felt a bit boliao, so I approached a security guard to ask him how to go to Lau Pa Sat despite the fact that I knew the area like the back of my hand and I was dead sure of its location. Haha, the uncle seemed stunned at my stupid question, but nevertheless cheerily gave me the directions. Haha, at least that wasted half a minute or so. Walked some more. There was a strong curry smell emanating from the Coffee Club (or some name similar to that) eatery that was the subject of some debate a few months ago. Walked some more. I was surprised by how many people there were walking around as seemingly aimless as I was, except that most of them seemed to have a destination in mind. Haha, oh well. Ended up talking to this guy who was walking in the same direction as me. Haha, seems weird talking to a stranger on hindsight, but he seemed like a tourist, that's why I didn't find it weird at that time. Malaysian working in Singapore, that's about it when I reached my destination 10 minutes early. Then a change of plans. Meet at the Conference Hall directly. Taking a cab down. So I walked there. Surprisingly my legs were not feeling tired. Was about to wait outside when she said she would be late. So I went in first.

Woah, this was when my happiness curve started shooting upwards that day. I walked in like a star. There were many youngsters around, and some of them apparently recognised me, although I had no idea who the hell they were. So I went to the toilet to hide. HAha, no la, went to do up my hair. Oops, vain kia. No la. The toilet was freaking cramped. I had to turn sideways for an uncle to pass behind me at the washing basins. And when I opened the door to go out, there was this angmoh who was about to enter. I held the door for him, and he looked surprised, as if it were the first time a Singaporean held opened a toilet door for him. Well, maybe it was the first time a Singaporean held the toilet door open for him at the Singapore Conference Hall. But again, maybe it was his first visit there, so he had all the reason to be surprised. -__- But anyhow, he was appreciative, and gave a rather sharp bow, so much so that while being amused, I felt obliged to reciprocate his bow as much as I could without banging my head on the door. That's how cramped the place was.

Lunch time.

Yeah, but anyway I adjourned to the second floor where it's less crowded, and I ended up talking to one of the ushers (those pple who tear ur tickets and lead you to your seat). I was asking her how long more before the show started, and she was like saying 10 minutes. And yl wasn't there yet! Then I asked her what would happen if we went in late. And blah blah...

Then I saw some people from Hsinghai. Talked a bit with their concertmaster, and then later his son. They're having a concert in July. And one of the pieces is composed by Tan Dun, who is well known for 'chim' pieces. They played one of his songs, the Fire Sacrifice, last night, and it was really interesting. He used the concept of an 'orchestra theatre', where half of the orchestra is on stage and the other players are dispersed among the audience, creating a 3-D effect that way surpasses the surround sound system of Panasonic or Sony, to quote the witty conductor Yeh Tsung's words. And that concerto employs the use of 3 different types of huqin, which shows how versatile the soloist has to be. Frankly speaking, this was one of the most ridiculous songs I've ever heard. The whole song was full of weird special effects. Every possible mode of sound production was employed. From the rather common imitation of birds (there was a point when the whole concert hall seemed to be one giant aviary) to the crying of a bird, to the purposely produced scratching sounds on an erhu with the bow (with is usually frowned upon), to the usage of voice to imitate chants and the incessant "Shh....." by the musicians themselves, to even the conductor himself entering the role of a priest by shouting chants in a quirky way that I cannot describe. There was the crackling of fire, which was vivid cos of the 3-D nature of the orchestra's sound. There was even a part where all the musicians on stage held a piece of their paper scores and flapped them side to side to produce a whish-wash sound according to a certain rhythm. Siao! Haha. And there was also this part where everyone was playing something except the musicians in the cello/bass section, who were hitting and striking their instruments in various ways. Totally ridiculous! But eye-opening all the same..:D

But my favourite piece has to be by Yu Hong Mei - Red Plum Blossom Capriccio. It's probably the most traditional piece of the night, and was solidly delivered by her and the thick, full overtures by the orchestra. Oh did I meantion that she's damn chio in person too? Cool!!! What really made my day was when we bumped into her at Lau Pa Sat after the concert with my teacher Zhang Yu Ming and his wife, an SCO musician. She was Zhang's student at the Central Conservatory of Music some years ago, which makes me and her the same generation, in a way. And it's so cool to meet her face to face! Prof Zhang was making the introductions, and I was like speechless and almost staring at her. Haha, don't think she was offended though, she was also staring back at me, with a sailor moon smile. :D And the stupid thing was I forgot to get her autograph.....

But anyway, we left after that on a cab. Dropped her off at pgp and then went home.

Duty!!! Wah now muscle aching...yesterday had IPPT training, after that still go gym for a while. Then today went swimming, swam like 20 laps.

Today the regulars treated us to pizza and KFC for lunch, I din miss much although I was on duty and came only at 3 plus, cos they left like 1 whole pizza and 3 chicken wings and mashed potato and coleslaw for the 3 of us on duty! Oh! It was only me, cos one of the duty guys came early specially to feast, and the other one was already on duty during lunchtime. :p haha, damn full now. I din even eat the cookhouse dinner.

Tomorrow there's supposed to be a class gathering at Jason's place. But then up till now he hasn't confirmed with me the time. And I am supposed to meet yl at 5:45 at city hall so we can grab dinner before heading down to the Singapore Conference Hall for the concert. Hmm see how lar.

Talking to a fren on MSN who says he chatted with me two years ago online. Hmm, can't really remember so gave him the benefit of the doubt. Gomez says he thinks he's gay though. *Shrugs* Haha, well turns out he's a music enthusiast, and plays the erhu too. Well, he's actually a SAF regular who's ORDing this year, and in the midst of finding a job, he still finds time to help set up the Singapore Opera Institute Chinese Orchestra, and also takes private lessons from an SCO player. I respect such people, people who sacrifice time and material leisure for the arts. But too bad, I am hardly near it. The least I can do though, is help out occasionally at local arts organisations and perhaps, watch concerts so that musicians get paid. :)

1.4.04

I'm staying in for lunch today. Wanted to play carrom but everyone decided to sleep instead. The carrom board miraculously appeared last week. So every lunch time there'll be people playing it. Something fun to do at last! I've played like 4 games since yesterday.

I am falling ill. Everyday when I wake up, I feel unrested. Today was worse. I had a slight headache. Signs of flu. Plus a sore throat and a partially blocked nose. =( I sneezed twice in a row when I reached the office. At least now it's not getting worse.

It's probably to do with the contaminated water supply my office is currently facing. There was a water cut on Sat evening, and since then, the water has been murky and chalky, like someone decided to use the reservoirs to test the latest detergent. :S And I am surviving on 1.5 litres of water everyday for the past few days. Even had to resort to filling up our bottles at the cookhouse water dispenser! Pathetic shit. Why can't they do something about the water? =(

On duty tomorrow. Actually I like Friday duties sometimes, cos it means a pseudo long weekend as I book out on Sat morning. But then the thing is, when I go home, I sleep. So when I wake up, it's as if I just returned from the office on a regular Sat. =(

Hope it doesn't rain tomorrow morning so I can go swim.

Had a long talk with one of my friends yesterday on the way home. He was saying how he's waiting to venture overseas once he ORDs and has completed his studies in Singapore. His family believes in venturing out, not that they have anything against Singapore. The impression I got is that they'll not settle for a comfortable life here if they can explore somewhere new. It's quite a different attitude from what I've always thought most locals possess. But on the other hand, one can possibly link this attitude with the tendency of locals having a "I'll migrate someday" mentality, which is on the other end of the 'ideal or not' spectrum.
